A Day In The Life Of Luke Faccini – Chief Do-Gooder

My days fall into two vastly different types. One with my 3 year old son, the other without. What follows is one day in my life.

4:25 am in Red Hill, 2 km North West of Brisbane CBD

My eyes open moments before my phone is set to wake me. It is time to start my morning routine. A quick priming and wash in my bathroom before reconnecting with my creator. Then I sit for a guided meditation, to tune into new potentials, and feel into deep gratitude. My mind and soul are centred and I am in tune for the day.

As I am intermittent fasting, I take a dose of MCT oil, then my mushroom extracts Cordyceps, Lion’s mane and turkey tail from my good friends at Lifecykel , today I also take 50mg of modafinil. Then wash it all down with an ice cold nitro Columbian coffee from Pablo & Rustys.

6:00 am Burn & Learn

I put my airpods in and hit play on an audio book, today it is Storyworthy (for the second listen – because it is gold!) and head downstairs.  I walk through the doors at Goodlife Ashgrove, just 5 mins up the road my place.

This morning I do an hour on the treadmill in fat burn mode, all the while listening to the audiobook and taking notes in a Google doc. The machine hits warm down and tells me I have burned 645 cals. My shirt is soaked through and I feel alive!

7:15 am Preparation

Back home, I shower and write my top three priorities for the day on the whiteboard.

  • Shoot GoodNorth video
  • Proposal for a new client
  • Outland Denim’s workshop

I wished my 17 year old daughter happy birthday via phone and attempted to schedule a zoom video with her for this evening unsuccessfully. Our timetables today don’t align with the workshop, dinner with her Grandparents, and the day light savings offset (for NSW). Will fly her up next week.

Time for nitro coffee number two. Then I sit down to work on the script for the video I am about to shoot. It’s purpose is to spread awareness of the GoodNorth community events calendar our team have built to help the community plan events better. Once I am happy with the script, it’s time to set up for the shoot.

9:00 am And Scene

Lights, tripods, plant positioning, all to make the shot look nice. I am a hack at this, so I spend some time trying out a few combinations that I have been studying on Youtube, in discussion with Ernesto, my video editor, to get it looking more dramatic.

After doing several recordings, it appears the Filmic pro app I use is corrupted. All the audio is playing back distorted and way off sync. So frustrated, I do a single take on the native iPhone camera app and decide that will just have to do.

I use Filmic Pro because of the 4K and awesome remote control app that I have on my second phone. It is a necessity when I am shooting alone like this. It is usually pretty reliable.

With the video done I switch to Facebook and go live into our Sponge team Facebook group because it is Monday and it’s time to set the week for success with the team. Today’s focus is improving our internal communication – I want us to delight each other with every interaction. Raving fans inside make raving fans outside after all!

Video done for the day, so time to reset the apartment and put the equipment away. There are a few tasks to be done, including reviewing items that need my approval and feedback in our project management tool ClickUp, and payroll for the team.

12:30 pm Nourishment

Time for some nutrients. Smoothie time! Frozen banana, blueberries, dates, baby spinach, avocado, hemp protein and ice cold water. Yum! I drink it at my desk and spend the next hour working on a proposal before it is time to head out.

The proposal I have been working on is for our new Impact Brand Story Intensive. It is a four week online program with one-on-one consulting to fast track the creation of a compelling impact brand story. I am so excited to be delivering this!

1:50 pm Mountain Tribe

An hour drive South to Outland Denim means listening to 2.5 hours of audiobook (at 2.5x speed!) and I will finish the book by the time I get there. I haven’t been to Mt Tamborine before and the roads I encounter, especially the last 20 mins or so, I can see how fun it would be on a motorbike! Nice twisties!

Note to self. Book in a ride day with Tom!

I see plenty of friendly faces from our GoodNorth tribe at the workshop. Sally Townsend (of course, she is running it!), Christine McDougall, Tiah Goldstein, Joel Bird, Ksenia Demidova, and Ben Fahey. And a really enlightening presentation by Yvette Selim and Carolyn Liaw from Anti-Slavery Australia. I am inspired to create a modern slavery statement for The Sponge.

5:00 pm Crushing it Home

The event is done and everyone is heading off. So it’s time for me to head back to Brisbane. And with the Storyworthy book complete, I hit play on Crushing it by Gary Vaynerchuk again, to prime me for tomorrow’s social media strategy meeting with Yinny. Another hour in the car means another 2.5 hours of the book!

A quick pit stop on route to refuel the car, and I grab a plant based protein bar to fuel myself for a workout which I am keen to do. I arrive at home briefly to change clothes, and I’m just in time to catch the remnants of the sunset from my balcony.

6:18 pm Intensity

I shoot and send a quick video to my son via his mum’s messenger. Then off to the gym for a weights session and more audiobook. My current routine is a full body 5×5 session. It’s intense with 30 second rest and takes just under one hour.

Loving Gary Vee! Have had a massive idea during this session and will float it at my team meeting tomorrow.

It is later than usual for dinner when I get home, so I throw together toasted sandwiches with roasted veggies and pesto, rather than spending any time to cook. Then I shower again, and sit down to complete outstanding tasks and write my story point for today (Storyworthy daily homework).

8:30 pm Partial Decompression

With all my tasks done, it is time to decompress with some baklava and an episode (or two) of “All American”. This ends up playing in the background while I do hashtag research on Instagram stimulated by what I heard from Gary today, and then catch up on some LinkedIn interaction.

I end the day the same as it began. With prayer followed by a gratitude meditation to send me off to sleep – feeling good! Now I am all done and dusted.

Asleep by 10:30pm A good day!

Branding is a familiar concept to comms & marketing professionals like myself. But it’s often a mystery to other staff, and for brand to be authentic, unique and indispensable they all need to be on board. This training helped me clarify branding to everyone in our organisation. Now they’re all part of the brand redevelopment crew, identifying and sharing stories that resonate with our values and purpose. Thanks, Luke, for launching our journey to uncover the brand that ‘comes from within’.
Avril Janks

We were in the middle of re-branding and wanted to know how better to market our product including how better to tell our story. This webinar provided practical marketing techniques, and rationale to explain the benefit of this strategy. The 'light bulb' moment for me was making the connection between the power of storytelling and marketing our brand.

The Sponge is enabling small business to focus on essential elements of marketing/strategy. I used to go in circles and best guess engagement with customers; I didn’t understand my target market. The Sponge gave me a real wake-up call: To realise how much time and money I was throwing away for no return. The learning was interesting and interactive. Now, I feel in control and focused.
